A Christmas Message From The President
TWENTY-THREE Christmases ago, President J. Willard Marriott wrote the following message for Hot Shoppes Employees.  The message is so fitting today that we though we would repeat it for Mr. Marriott's message this year:

NEVER BEFORE in my memory, has Christmas meant so much to every American.  he has freedom, peace, security and plenty while millions are deprived of these blessings.

But there is something for which Americans are hungry, and that is brotherly love and kindness.  Lack of this is the result of selfishness, greed, animosities, class distinctions and petty hatreds.

It is my hope that there are none of these destructive forces in our organization.  Rather let there be that spirit of the Master, as indicated by his words, "Love thy neighbor as thyself."  Following this admonition would cure all the evils of the world.  It would give human beings what they want most.  It would bring unbounded happiness and joy this Christmastime and during the coming year to all of our fellow workers.

How could I wish more for you?

And for the high degree of your loyalty and the excellence of your service this past year, accept my sincerest appreciation.

J. WILLARD MARRIOTT

IN MEMORIAM TO JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY

Almighty Father . . . help us to carry out the principles that this
great man left us as his heritage to the nation . . . help us to truly be
brothers . . . to remember the less fortunate, wherever they might be
. . . to keep ourselves strong, yet gentle . . and in doing these things,
show the world that his life's work was not in vain.

WHOLE COMPANY MOURNS TRAGEDY

Though grief-stricken, employees of Hot Shoppes cam in to work, for in the Washington Metropolitan Area, thousands of outsiders came to the Nation's capital to attend services for President John F. Kennedy.

Hotels were at capacity, as were airlines and restaurants.

It was the job of Hot Shoppes employees to put duty above personal grief and take care of those so far from home.

Vice President Woodrow D. Marriott asked that all employees be highly commended for the job they did during this tragic weekend in seeing that so many were fed and housed.

The flag at the River Road office dipped to half mast and will remain there for 30 days as a tribute to the memory of President Kennedy.

When the news of the tragedy was first heard, it was not unusual to see employees and guests weep openly, sharing the grief that was all America's at the moment.

A prayer, a copy of which is reproduced above, was posted in all shoppes and represented the feeling of all in our company at our great loss -- both personal and company.
